Adrenal Stress affects nearly everyone with chronic health challenges, and perhaps to some degree the vast majority of humanity

The adrenal glands help handle life's many stressors. They can easily get overwhelmed when the amount of daily stress exceeds the capability of the system to maintain balance.

Stress can come in many forms.

· Physical stress includes things such as lack of or too much exercise, insomnia, working too much, etc.

· Chemical Stress includes poor dietary choices, health imbalances, food allergies/sensitivities, and environmental pollutants, etc. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are being linked to many health issues including increased levels of stress, inflammation, Obesity, Metabolic Syndrome and the development of Type 2 Diabetes. Moreover, intergenerational vertical transmission effects have been seen in offspring of trauma survivors resulting in increased incidence of things such as obesity and even smoking.

· Thermal Stress includes episodes of temperature changes like becoming overheated or getting too chilled. This can include things such as saunas which can be good for health when experienced within the proper range that the body can handle In general, too much of even a good thing may become a stress to the system.

· Emotional and Mental Stress includes social, emotional, and/or spiritual issues. These can come from influences outside of the individual but can also be due to an individuals self perception.

Adrenal stress occurs when the quantity and quality of stress overwhelms an area of your brain called the hypothalamus. This area of the brain directs the actions and outputs of the pituitary gland and your brain stem. This can lead to hormonal dysregulation, often starting with elevated cortisol and hyperadrenia.

Common systems include a faster heart rate, nervousness/anxiety, and increased perspiration, If stress is left unchecked and becomes chronic, the system can end up secreting lower than normal cortisol levels, resulting in hypoadrenia. The most common symptom associated with this stage is fatigue. Orthostatic hypotension may also be seen which results in light headedness/dizziness with going from lying down/sitting to standing. This “syndrome”, when left unchecked and uncorrected, can result in serious immune and nervous system disorders, including autoimmune conditions, chronic fatigue, loss of memory and focus, as well as thyroid and male or female hormone disorders.

The adrenals help to regulate blood sugar levels between meals, sodium and corresponding fluid levels, and the catecholamines (epinephrine and nor epinephrine) used during the “fight or flight” response. The first of the morning cortisol “spike”also helps in immune system recognition and tolerance.
